A useful principle

Tools should remove friction, not add identity.

The most effective setup is the one you understand well enough to use instinctively. Start with the situations you photograph, identify the constraint that repeatedly gets in your way, then spend on that constraint. A modest kit used consistently will teach you more than a large kit chosen for status.

  • Define the subject and working distance.
  • Choose control and reliability before novelty.
  • Review your images for patterns, not just favourites.
